Plummer Block Housings, Explained

Plummer block housings combine with self-aligning ball bearings or spherical roller bearings to form a complete bearing unit. They give you a free choice of bearing, position on the shaft, seals and lubrication, and are made on a modular principle in cast iron, so a small range of housings covers many arrangements.

Each housing has two elongated bolt holes so the position can be adjusted slightly when aligning. The bearing seat is made for a non-locating arrangement: the bearing can move a little in either direction to take up shaft growth from heat. Special housing types can be made to order for requirements outside the standard range. For plain shafts, the bearing is fitted with an adapter sleeve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a plummer block housing?

A plummer block (also called a pedestal or SN housing) is a split cast iron housing that holds a self-aligning ball bearing or spherical roller bearing and bolts to a machine frame. Because it splits in two, the bearing can be fitted or inspected without removing the shaft ends.

How do I choose between the SN2, SN5 and SN6 series?

Start from the shaft diameter and the bearing you plan to fit. Each series gives a different length, height and weight for the same shaft size: SN2 is the smallest, SN5 is larger and SN6 is the largest. Our team can confirm which housing matches your bearing and sleeve.

Do you supply the bearing and sleeve with the housing?

Yes, on request. Tell us the bearing, adapter sleeve and seals you want and we will quote the complete assembly or the housing alone.

Can’t find your size?

We supply sizes, brands and special versions of plummer block housings that are not listed on this page. Type the exact size or designation you need and send it to us for a quote.
