Why Rolling Mill Bearings Fail: Causes and Fixes

Water, scale, shock load, clearance and lubrication: the usual reasons mill bearings fail and what maintenance teams can do.

Rolling mill bearings work under heavy load, shock, heat and water. When they fail, the stand stops and the mill loses output. These are the causes we see most often and what a maintenance team can do about each one.

1. Water and scale in the bearing

Roll cooling water and mill scale reach the bearing if the seals are worn or the wrong type is fitted. Water washes out grease and corrodes raceways, and scale wears them. Check seals every time rolls are changed and replace any that show wear. Keep the lubrication lines clear so fresh grease or oil pushes contamination out.

2. Shock when the bar bites

The load jumps as each bar enters the stand. A bearing, coupling or gearbox chosen only for the average load has no margin for this. Give your supplier the mill type, stand position, speed and product so the part is matched to the real duty.

3. Wrong clearance or fit

Heat from the roll and the process changes fits and internal clearance in the bearing. Use the clearance class and the shaft and housing fits the mill builder or bearing maker specifies. Do not swap a standard-clearance bearing for a special one without checking.

4. Worn couplings and spindles

Backlash in gear couplings and spindles sends shock into the gearbox and the bearings. Inspect the teeth, re-grease on schedule and replace worn parts as a set.

5. Lubrication missed between shutdowns

Greasing gets skipped on busy shifts. Write a simple schedule per stand with the grease type, quantity and interval, and sign it off each shift. Use a grease suited to the temperature and to water exposure at that position.

Key Takeaways

  • Seal condition decides bearing life in a wet, scaly mill
  • Specify bearings and couplings for shock, not average load
  • Use the clearance and fits the mill builder specifies
  • Keep a signed lubrication schedule per stand
