Bearings for Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers

Sealing, type selection, shock allowance and supply planning for agro machinery OEMs.

Agricultural machinery meets dust, mud, water and shock, and it often sits idle for months. Picking the right bearing at the design stage reduces warranty claims and field failures. This guide is for manufacturers and OEM buyers.

1. Protect against dust and water

Open bearings do not last in a field. Use sealed bearings or bearing units with effective seals on shafts exposed to soil, crop dust and water. Where the machine is washed down, choose seals suited to that.

2. Choose between ball, roller and mounted units

Ball bearings suit lighter, higher-speed shafts. Roller bearings carry heavier shock loads in rotor shafts and gearboxes. Mounted bearing units with a housing simplify assembly on frames and cope with some misalignment, which makes them common on threshers, conveyors and elevators.

3. Allow for shock

Stones, roots and uneven feed create shock. Leave a margin in load rating and pair bearings with chains, belts and couplings that tolerate it.

4. Fix the specification and brand

Variation between batches causes assembly problems. Agree a fixed designation and brand with your supplier, with an equivalent grade named as an approved alternative if needed, and buy to that for the whole season.

5. Plan supply around the season

Production peaks before the sowing and harvest seasons. Share your yearly volume and delivery months so your supplier can hold stock and deliver on a schedule.

Key Takeaways

  • Use sealed bearings and units for field duty
  • Match bearing type to the shaft and shock load
  • Fix the specification and approved equivalents
  • Schedule supply around the season
