Crusher V-Belt Drive Problems and Fixes

Mixed belts, tension, worn grooves and alignment: fixes for crusher belt drives.

The V-belt drive between the motor and the crusher flywheel takes shock every minute it runs. Most belt problems come from a few causes that are easy to fix once you know them.

1. Mixed old and new belts

A worn belt stretches differently from a new one, so the new one carries more load. Replace a set of belts together, and match banded belts or sets from the same supplier.

2. Wrong tension

A loose belt slips and heats up. An over-tight belt overloads the bearings. Tension to the drive maker's value and check again after the first hours of running.

3. Worn pulley grooves

Worn grooves let the belt sit too low and slip, which glazes it. Check the grooves with a groove gauge and replace worn pulleys.

4. Misaligned pulleys

Misaligned pulleys wear one side of the belt and the groove. Align the pulleys with a straight edge or laser tool when fitting and after repairs.

5. Belt type for the duty

Banded belts keep multi-belt drives together under pulsating load. Wedge belts carry more power in a compact drive. Tell your supplier the belt code, number of belts and pulley sizes so the right type is quoted.

Key Takeaways

  • Replace belts as a set
  • Tension and align on every fit
  • Replace worn pulleys
  • Send the belt code and pulley sizes with your enquiry
