About Self-Aligning Ball Bearings
The inner ring of a self-aligning ball bearing has two raceways, and the outer ring has a single spherical raceway centred on the bearing axis. This lets the bearing tolerate shaft misalignment and deflection, which is where the name comes from.
They are suited to applications where small deflection of the shaft may occur in use. Tapered bore bearings are also supplied as a set with adapter sleeves.
- Capable of carrying radial loads, but not suitable for axial loads
- Suitable for low or medium speed applications only
- Accommodate shaft misalignment and housing errors
Available Variants
- Open basic design type
- Straight bore and tapered bore types
- Sealed type
- With C2, CN, C3 radial clearance
- With extended inner ring
- Pressed steel, machined brass or nylon cage
- Tapered bore bearings supplied with adapter sleeves
Suffix Codes
Add these suffixes to the bearing number to specify seals, clearance, cage and precision options.
| Suffix | Meaning |
|---|---|
| C2 | Radial internal clearance less than normal. |
| CN | Normal radial internal clearance. Generally, no special suffix is used for normal radial internal clearance. |
| C3 | Radial internal clearance higher than normal. |
| G1–G15 | Internal grease type codes. Contact us for details. |
| K | Tapered bore, with taper of 1:12. |
| M | Machined brass cage. |
| P | Nylon cage. |
| P5 | Dimensional and running accuracy conforming to ISO class 5. |
| Q1–Q8 | Internal reference codes. Contact us for details. |
| RS | Rubber seal with steel sheet reinforcement on one side of the bearing. |
| 2RS | Rubber seal with steel sheet reinforcement on both sides of the bearing. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What sizes are available in the 22 series?
22 series bearings are available from 10mm – 100mm bore, as listed in the dimension table on this page. Each size has its own bearing number for ordering.
What load ratings apply to 22 bearings?
Dynamic and static load ratings vary by size — see the table for the exact rating per bearing number. Larger sizes carry proportionally higher load ratings.
What is the 22 series typically used for?
Common applications include textile and agricultural machinery and conveyor and line shafting, and similar general industrial equipment.
Can self-aligning ball bearings carry axial load?
They are intended mainly for radial load and are not suitable for heavy axial loads. Their strength is tolerating shaft misalignment and deflection.
Can I order 22 series bearings with special options?
Yes. Many options are available — see the variants and suffix codes on this page — subject to design and manufacturing constraints. Share your requirement in a quote request.
