V-Belt Drives vs Chain Drives: Choosing the Right Power Transmission

Efficiency, maintenance and load considerations when selecting between belts and chains.

V-belts and roller chains both transmit power between shafts. Which is better depends on the speed, the load, the layout and how much maintenance the drive will get.

V-belt drives

A V-belt grips the sides of a grooved pulley and transmits power by friction. V-belt drives run smoothly and quietly, absorb some shock, need no lubrication and are cheaper to buy. They suit higher speeds and light to medium loads.

Because the drive relies on friction, a belt can slip under overload or when badly tensioned. That slip can protect the machine but also means the speed ratio is not exact.

Chain drives

A roller chain engages sprocket teeth, so there is no slip and the speed ratio stays exact. Chains handle heavy loads and slow speeds well, last long when lubricated, and work in hot or oily places where belts struggle.

Chains are noisier than belts, need lubrication and periodic re-tensioning as they wear, and are heavier.

Side-by-side

  • Speed: belts suit higher speeds; chains suit lower speeds and heavy torque.
  • Slip: belts can slip; chains cannot.
  • Maintenance: belts need tension checks; chains need lubrication and tension checks.
  • Noise: belts are quieter.
  • Environment: chains tolerate heat and oil better; belts suit clean, dry conditions.
  • Cost: belts are usually cheaper to start with.

How to choose

Pick a V-belt for a motor-to-fan or motor-to-pump drive where smooth, quiet running matters. Pick a chain for a conveyor, a slow heavy drive or where an exact ratio matters. Whichever you choose, size the drive from the power, speed and service factor, and give the supplier the motor power, speeds and centre distance.

Key Takeaways

  • Belts are quiet and cheap; chains hold an exact ratio and carry heavy loads.
  • Choose from power, speed, ratio accuracy and environment.
  • Send us your motor power, speeds and centre distance for a drive recommendation.
